Layers of Identity
Studio Art students engaged in meaningful art-making processes by creating mixed media pieces representing an aspect of their identity. They were required to use the new skill of image transfers and have at least 3 layers, and the rest was up to them. They managed the many moving parts of mixed media and the higher amount of decision making required in a choice based project.

Key Artist: Giana De Dier
Giana De Dier's work examines the experiences of Afro-Caribbean migrants in the segregated Canal Zone and Panama City at the beginning of the 20th century. Her work reconstructs situations from photographic archives, oral histories, family photos and documents to spark conversations around memory, identity, and representation. It is centered around the idea that just as memory can be fragmented and fabricated, the juxtaposition of images and different materials reframe old beliefs creating new perspectives and representations.

Assessment
When starting to plan for their pieces, students researched mixed media artists to begin brainstorming. They found examples of artworks they enjoyed and answered questions about what is successful in the piece and what could be edited. Then the class compiled their images to create a mixed media inspiration resource for reference throughout the project.
